Components of a Video Wall Setup

A successful video wall setup requires more than just high-quality screens—it depends on a combination of hardware, software, and infrastructure working together seamlessly. From display panels and media players to controllers and content management systems, each component plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth operation, vibrant visuals, and easy content updates. Below are the essential components needed to create and manage a high-performing video wall system.

Video Walls FAQs

A video wall is a large display made by tiling multiple screens (most commonly LCD panels or direct-view LED tiles) so they act as one big, seamless canvas. A video wall controller/processor (and content software) manages sources and layouts—showing one full-screen image or many windows at once. Video walls are used in lobbies, control rooms, retail, stadiums, campuses, and hospitality for high-brightness, scalable visuals. Key considerations: pixel pitch, bezel width, brightness (nits), viewing distance, redundancy, and mounting/service access.

A video wall in a building is used to inform, guide, brand, monetize, and alert on-site audiences. Top applications include:

  • Lobby branding & welcome (hero visuals, tenant logos)
  • Interactive wayfinding & directories (maps, QR hand-offs)
  • Tenant & visitor communications (announcements, policies)
  • Events & calendars (meetings, community notices)
  • Emergency alerts & overrides (all-hazards messaging)
  • Transit & commute boards (real-time bus/rail/rideshare)
  • Amenity & room scheduling (fitness, conference, EV bays)
  • Leasing & retail advertising (vacancies, promotions, sponsor ads)
  • ESG & sustainability dashboards (energy, air quality)
  • Security & operations status (lobby cams, building notices)
  • Elevator banks & lift lobbies (short micro-messages)
  • Menu/food-court boards (pricing, specials)
  • Public art & community content (local culture, placemaking)
  • Campus/enterprise broadcasts (CEO messages, live streams)

Core requirements for a video wall install:

  • Power & electrical: Dedicated circuits sized for total load, clean power distribution, surge protection/UPS, proper grounding/bonding, outlet placement behind/near cabinets or processors.
  • Data & control: Home-run Cat6A/Fiber to the controller; signal extenders where needed; VLAN/QoS for media traffic; secure remote access (VPN/whitelisting).
  • Mounting & structure: Load-rated wall or freestanding frame, micro-adjustable mounts, confirmed wall flatness, front vs. rear service depth planning, seismic/rigging hardware where required.
  • Clearances & access: Service access (front-service = minimal clearance; rear-service = aisle space), sightlines/viewing distance, ADA protrusion limits (≤4" in U.S.) along egress paths.
  • Thermal & environment: Heat load/BTU planning, ventilation/HVAC, ambient light/glare control, dust/salt exposure, IP/NEMA ratings for outdoor/semi-outdoor.
  • Cabling & conduit: Power/data separation, plenum/LSZH where code requires, tidy cable management, labeled patch panels.
  • Safety & code compliance: UL/ETL-listed components, local permits, NFPA/IBC considerations, fire-stopping for penetrations.
  • Commissioning: Uniformity calibration, color/brightness matching, EDID mapping, processor layouts, test patterns, documentation, and staff training.
  • Reliability & ops: Redundant PSUs/modules, spare tiles/panels, monitoring, warranty/SLA.

Costs vary significantly depending on:

  • Type of display (LED, LCD, etc.)
  • Screen size and resolution
  • Mounting and structural needs
  • Software and control systems

General price range: $10,000 to $100,000+ for enterprise-grade walls.

Yes. Navigo video walls support multiple input sources simultaneously—such as live tv, dashboards, presentations, or social media feeds—arranged in zones or layered dynamically.

With a video wall controller/processor or CMS that supports multi-window / multiview, a video wall can display several inputs simultaneously—e.g., HDMI/SDI sources, IP streams (RTSP/NDI/SRT), dashboards/web pages, cloud CMS presentations, and screen shares.

Common layouts include split-screen, grid (2×2, 3×3, 4×4), picture-in-picture (PiP), ticker/overlay zones, and custom drag-and-drop windows. The maximum number of concurrent sources depends on the processor’s decode channels, input cards, AV-over-IP bandwidth, licensing, and the canvas resolution (4K/8K+).

Helpful features: presets/scene recall, scheduling, EDID management, frame/genlock sync, audio follow-video or mix, HDCP compliance, API control, and KVM for operators.

Absolutely. Video walls are highly customizable in terms of size, layout (e.g., 2x2, 4x4, or creative layouts), brightness, resolution, and content capabilities.

Modern LED and LCD video walls are modular and can be tailored across four layers:

  1. Physical/Architectural – custom size & aspect ratio, thin/zero bezel layouts, curved (concave/convex), mosaic/ribbon walls, portrait/landscape, front vs rear service, freestanding vs wall-mounted, seismic/rigging options.
  2. Visual/Performance – selectable pixel pitch (e.g., P1.2–P3.9), brightness (nits), refresh rate, HDR/10-bit, color calibration to match brand palettes, viewing distance optimization, indoor/outdoor (IP65+).
  3. Content & Controlcustom templates/brand skins, multi-zone layouts, interactive touch/QR hand-off, live data dashboards, wayfinding, multilingual, video wall controller/CMS with presets, API, AV-over-IP.
  4. Operations & Compliancepower/network placement, ventilation/heat load, ADA protrusion and egress considerations, UL/ETL listed components, remote monitoring, roles/permissions, warranty/SLA.

Result: a solution that fits your space, maintains brand consistency, and meets performance and code requirements.
